This project involved teachers, students, local development actors, and citizens from the six partner municipalities.
The six municipalities that integrated the project were: Arruda dos Vinhos, Loures, Mafra, Sobral de Monte Agraço, Torres Vedras and Vila Franca de Xira.
To help citizens from six municipalities to understand the causes related to development problems, starting from the heritage of their municipalities, with a view to promoting Global Citizenship that is active in the construction of fairer, more equitable and sustainable societies;
To develop resources and train students, teachers and local development actors in the themes and values of Education for Development (ED) in order to mobilise them for the promotion of Global Citizenship, starting from the link between ED and the heritage of the Historical Route of the Lines of Torres;
The study "Journeys to Citizen Engagement: Action Research with Development Education Practitioners in Portugal, Cyprus and Greece", in which the ED Group of the Portuguese NGDO Platform played a very relevant role, recommends linking the needs of people to local realities, making citizen engagement relevant to the local context and local communities. To achieve global transformation, we must start at local and individual level, the authors state, reinforcing the importance of involving people in action on local issues and, whenever relevant, enabling connections at global level.
In this project, it was decided to connect ED to the realities of the six partner municipalities and to the identity of the communities, through the exploration of the heritage of the Historical Route of the Lines of Torres.
There are many possibilities to explore the heritage of the RHTL in the light of Global Citizenship. War and Peace, Sustainability of Natural Resources and Human Rights are just some of the themes that can be addressed from the heritage, meeting the general idea that it is important to learn from history in order not to repeat the mistakes of the past and to create a better future.
