The Construction of a vegetable garden: workshop of practical-pedagogical environmental actions in a school context

On May 25th, at Escola Básica Maria da Luz de Deus Ramos, in Bairro das Galinheiras, Lisbon, a vertical vegetable garden was built as a complement to the existing agricultural space, where different types of vegetables and plants were sown. It was created as an alternative to traditional pots. The initiative was promoted by AIDGLOBAL and intended to involve the children in the process of creating a school garden and make them aware of the importance of its maintenance, while identifying new species in it.

This activity aims to promote greater contact with nature and work on values such as cooperation, solidarity, unity, respect and sustainability, along with teamwork that strengthens relationships between school children from different countries.

João Santos, an agricultural technician, carried out the activity. He was responsible for organizing this session with 50 children, divided into 5 groups. Each group had the opportunity to choose a plant, herb or vegetable from their country of origin and sow them in the vertical garden. Lettuce, Chives, Strawberries, Basil, Spinach, Parsley and Coriander were the seeds most requested to be cultivated.

This activity, considered as a sustainable practice, was very appreciated by the children, as it gave them a sense of well-being and tranquillity thanks to the direct contact with nature.

This initiative was carried out in the scope of the “Neighborhood and Volunteering Labs” activity of the European project “NEAR – NEwly ARrived in a common home” is a European project funded by the European Commission, under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) with the ISMU Foundation as a promoter and as partner entities TamatCARDET, and AIDGLOBAL and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
