AIDGLOBAL marks the 16th Anniversary of its foundation

A day dedicated to the celebration, reflection and balance of the impact of 16 years dedicated to promoting Change through Education.

AIDGLOBAL’s history begins with the letter “S” – “S” from Smile.

Mozambique, August 2005. When more than 20 children awoke with smiles when they saw balloons of various colors flying, we knew that the change started there, at that moment…, the change that stems from Education and which believes that personal and social development of children and young people is the first step towards a more just, egalitarian and inclusive society, made up of free, autonomous, solidary and critical citizens and citizens in relation to the reality that surrounds them.

Early Childhood Education, Development Education and Development Cooperation are the pillars on which AIDGLOBAL has been built and it is through each of them that this Organization has been acting, including and developing a Heterogeneous public, today made up of children, young people, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers and also indirect beneficiaries – fathers, mothers, teachers, educators and guardians – who are crucial within the framework of an educational action ideally developed in close cooperation with the family.

In Portugal, AIDGLOBAL has been developing this work.

Over the last decade and a half, there have been around 2700 hours of training and awareness-raising actions in Development Education and Global Citizenship, 8300 children and young people were awakened to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Human Rights and others Global Citizenship themes, 1000 educational agents were trained to promote Global Citizenship themes in their professional context and 16 published publications, including articles and pedagogical resources ― all within the scope of projects and the growing social responsibility of private and collective entities.

In Mozambique, it was no different. The involvement of everyone contributed to making it possible to donate 50,000 books, equip 30 libraries and train 700 teachers, along with technicians, currently qualified to carry out library activities. Over the past 16 years, access to books in school libraries has been guaranteed to 29,000 students, who are also beneficiaries of 165 reading animation sessions held in schools. In the context of Early Childhood Education, a mission that, over the last few years, has deserved particular attention by AIDGLOBAL, namely in the context of the project “Educadores em Movimento – Uma Educação Itinerante para a Primeira Infância” (Educators in Motion – An Itinerant Education for Early Childhood), we trained 46 women.

Today, we look back on the path that has been taken so that, through it, we can follow the path of the steps taken as an integral part of a deeply-rooted but constantly changing process, centered on building a School where everyone and anyone can enter and, above all, leave with a perspective of life and with a broader understanding of the world as a shared place between citizens, different but equal in rights and dignity.

Following what philosopher John Dewey said when referring to his understanding of Education, we also believe that it: “It is not the preparation for life. It’s life itself”, the same life that breaks open in a smile and that is made and broken between words that, condensed, dispersed or grouped, circulate disorderly like the air that is breathed and that inspires us, at the moment of continuing our mission: Education.

AIDGLOBAL – Acção e Inetgração para o Desenvolvimento Global (AIDGLOBAL ― Action and Integration for Global Development) is a non-profit Non-Governmental Organization for Development (NGDO), which develops and promotes projects within the scope of Development Education and Global Citizenship, in Portugal, and programs within the scope of Literacy in Mozambique. Its Mission aims to Act, Include and Develop through Education, because it believes that Change happens through Education.
