Cleaning campaign in coastal areas collects 130Kg of marine waste

On March 22, 25, 31 and April 29, four cleaning campaigns were held with the 8th-grade classes of the B+S School Professor Dr Francisco de Freitas Branco. The actions aimed to raise the students’ awareness of the marine litter problem and the need to continuously promote the Ocean’s protection.

The activities are carried out under the project “Porto Santo Sem Lixo Marinho”(Porto Santo Without Marine Waste) (Environment Program, EEA Grants), in synergy with the Action Plan “Da Escola para o Mundo – Agir, Incluir, Transformar” (From School to the World – Act, Include, Transform) (Active Citizens Fund, EEA Grants). It took place in Calhau da Serra de Dentro e da Serra de Fora and Fontinha beach. The students collected 130kg of garbage, of which 75kg was plastic.

It is essential to continue investing in this type of initiative to promote the protection of the oceans and biodiversity. If it is crucial to fight marine litter, it is also essential to clean beaches, coastal areas, streams, and places whose waters are threatened by pollution.
