Global Citizenship, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were the themes that guided each of the sessions.
On November 4 and 11, and December 2 and 9, the class of the course of Multimedia Production in Education of the Escola Superior de Educação, do Instituto Politécnico de Santarém, received four workshops sponsored by AIDGLOBAL, as part of one of the activities developed under the project “Jovens na Política – Participar para a Cidadania Global (2ª Edição)” (Youth in Politics – Participate for Global Citizenship (2nd Edition)).
The cycle of workshops was framed within the discipline of Global Citizenship, a course unit belonging to the above mentioned course, and brought together 22 young people in a reflection on areas such as Education for Development and Global Citizenship, in the light of the main local problems identified in Santarém.
During the initiative, several activities were streamlined, among which stand out: the creation of action proposals for the Municipality; the understanding of the Youth Goals and SDGs; the use of the MyPolis platform; and the creation of multimedia content in the area of education such as awareness campaigns and the production of videos on the SDGs.
According to Maria Pacheco, AIDGLOBAL Project Assistant, who has led and collaborated in the dynamization of the activities developed in the context of the project, “raising awareness and involving youth in local participation is essential. We recently reflected on this theme during the campaign “Bora Lá, Sai do Sofá” (Let’s Go, Get off the Sofa), from which we wanted to mobilise young people to vote during the local elections. Within the scope of these workshops, we tried to follow the path that precedes the choice and the effective decision-making that takes young people to the polls. In other words, through this cycle of workshops we tried to follow a necessary path that passes much more through listening to the opinions and perceptions of young people about the reality of Santarém, in order to promote their participation in local political processes, taking into account the Santarém Municipal Youth Plan”, she concludes.
The workshop cycle counted with the participation of trainer Laura Gonzalez who, during the four sessions, guided the students through several methods of Non Formal Education, permeating the formative action with group dynamics; theater; brainstorming and ice-breaker moments that contributed to fulfill the ultimate purpose of this cycle: to bring the youth closer to the mechanisms of political participation and make them aware of the importance of taking informed and conscious action, sustained by the recognition of citizenship, “gesto primeiro da política” (the first gesture of politics), as Professor André Barata once told us.
