Cycle of Workshops “Youth in Politics – Participate for Global Citizenship”

On May 11, 22 and June 1, AIDGLOBAL, together with the Municipality of Santarém, promoted the Cycle of Workshops “Youth in Politics – Participating for Global Citizenship”, within the scope of the project “Youth in Politics – Participate for Global Citizenship (2nd Ed.)”.

The initiative aimed to involve young activists, youth associations and Party Youth in local political participation, in favor of promoting Global Citizenship, having the Sustainable Development Goals as a political agenda. Topics such as Education for Development, Cooperation for Development, Youth Goals and Human Rights were worked on in a dynamic and interactive way, aiming to promote reflection, teamwork and youth empowerment.

The first workshop “Thinking globally and acting locally – How to participate and intervene in the territory” took place on May 11, online, from 7pm to 10pm. It was attended by Alexandre Poço, a young Deputy to the National Assembly, who shared his trajectory in politics and testimonies of members of Youth Party and youth associations on youth political activity.

The second workshop “What if we agree that we disagree? Human Rights, Sustainable Development and Politics” was held on Saturday, May 22, at the Convento de São Francisco, in Santarém. The initiative took place in the morning, from 10 am to 1 pm, and in the afternoon, from 3 pm to 4 pm, also with the participation of young activists and Party Youth. Those present were encouraged to learn about and reflect on the Youth Goals and to identify practices and policies in the Municipality of Santarém that contribute to achieving them. For the Objectives in which many or none of the practices were identified, it was proposed to the youths to prepare proposals for actions and/or policies and, later, to choose one and create an action plan. From this dynamic, good ideas emerged, which are expected to be implemented in Santarém one day!

The third workshop, “Think, propose or act. Where to start?”, like the first one, took place online, on June 1st, from 7pm to 10pm. Mário Lopes, African Union Youth Charter Ambassador to São Tomé and Príncipe, and Bernardo Gonçalves, founder and CEO of the MyPolis digital platform made valuable contributions on youth policy action, from a local and global perspective. Participants were invited to learn about and use MyPolis, a platform on which its users can attach proposals for actions or policies for their Municipality, which are then viewed by the local political authorities themselves.

The Cycle of Workshops was successfully concluded, with young people motivated to participate more actively in their communities, Party Youths and associations, through a Global and Local Citizenship.

The project “Youth in Politics – Participating for Global Citizenship (2nd Edition)” is promoted by AIDGLOBAL, co-financed by Camões – Institute of Cooperation and Language, I.P. and its partners are the National Youth Council (CNJ), National Federation of Youth Associations (FNAJ), Dypall Network, Center for International Studies – Lisbon University Institute, Portuguese Sports and Youth Institute (IPDJ), Lisbon Youth Center (CJL), and the Municipality of Santarém.
