The initiative, promoted by AIDGLOBAL under the project “Youth in Politics – Participate for Global Citizenship (2nd Ed.)”, took place on the 17th of July, between 9am and 1pm, through the Zoom Platform. The online meeting aimed to raise awareness and empower participants around Education for Development, with a focus on Volunteering, exploring the themes that involve it, namely Global Citizenship, Interdependence, Development and Social Justice between local and global.
The selection of the volunteers, which took place on the 6th of June, is in the context of the contest launched on the 22nd of March and extended throughout the national territory, under the motto “Tu Voluntária/o” (You Volunteer), which aims to provide a volunteering experience for the 4 selected young people, members of the Youth Parties, to be held in the district of Chibuto, Gaza province, Mozambique, between the 2nd and 15th of August 2022. This program will also include activities carried out in Portugal.
In the session, the young people were able to reflect, discuss and debate issues related to ED, and also had the opportunity to learn more about the Mozambican culture and its diversity, about food and health care during their stay in the country. The information was given by the Founder and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of AIDGLOBAL, Susana Damasceno.
In the mission that the volunteers will carry out, they will be introduced to the projects that the Organization implements in Mozambique, in the areas of Early Childhood Education and the promotion of literacy and reading. In addition, they will have the opportunity to get to know the local communities, talk to the people and local leaders, support the activities inherent to the projects, such as the Community Schools and School Libraries, created and equipped by AIDGLOBAL.
After their volunteering experience, young people will have to implement an Development Education initiative within their Party Youth, such as the elaboration of a political position paper related to the Sustainable Development Goals, the realisation of a symposium, a workshop, a training session and, no less relevant, a street action and/or exhibition.
The objective of all learning acquired and experienced by the volunteers in Mozambique is to ensure that it is replicated and multiplied within the Partisan Youth, since they are one of the project’s target audiences, which will result in greater awareness of Global Citizenship issues.
The project “Jovens na Política – Participar para a Cidadania Global (2ª Edição)” (Youth in Politics – Participate for Global Citizenship (2nd Edition)) is promoted by AIDGLOBAL, co-funded by Camões, I.P. and has as partners the Conselho Nacional da Juventude (National Youth Council) (CNJ), Federação Nacional das Associações Juvenis (National Federation of Youth Associations) (FNAJ), Dypall Network, ISCTE Center for International Studies, Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude (IPDJ), Lisbon Youth Centre (CJL), and the Municipality of Santarém, and is supported by Mypolis.
