From 17th to 21st March, the Xica Butterfly - the main character in the storybook "The Xica Butterfly in the Village of All Species" - flew around schools in the Odemira municipality to show children her adventures.
As part of the Mira a Terra programme, Odemira Town Council invited AIDGLOBAL to carry out activities in various schools in the municipality of Odemira, in the district of Beja, in the Alentejo region, with the aim of promoting a love of reading.
The book chosen to present during the activities was ‘The Xica Butterfly in the Village of All Species’, or ‘Phaphalati Xika ka xidoropana xingani minhlovo hinkwayu’ in XiChangana language, which is part of the collection of bilingual books for children ‘Livros para Começar’, written by Mélio Tinga, translated by Wiliamo Muchanga and illustrated by Ruben Zacarias. It tells a story about unity and environmental preservation, in which the animals of the forest come together to protect the environment after the Butterfly Xica's favourite tree is cut down. At the same time, it addresses the importance of Mozambican culture and some peculiarities that also occur in our daily lives.
With the desire to tell children more and more about the importance of unity, the Xica Butterfly travelled a long way around the Odemira municipality. In total, he visited 11 educational establishments, 6 of which were kindergartens and 5 primary schools, in 1st and 2nd year classes.
The Xica Butterfly started in Zambujeira do Mar, flew over São Teotónio, landed in Odemira, went on to Vila Nova de Milfontes, Foros de Galeado, Colos and Bicos, and finally rested in the village of Boavista dos Pinheiros. In conclusion, 400 students benefited from the activities organised by AIDGLOBAL.
The Xica Butterfly can't get enough... so she's going to keep flying, making the children of our country smile.
