Ecoality: Youth and Local Authorities together for Climate and Gender Justice!

"Ecoality: Youth and Local Authorities together for Climate and Gender Justice!" is a European project, funded by the European Commission, which aims to help increase awareness and a sense of co-responsibility among European citizens regarding individual and collective behavior in the face of the interdependence and intersectionality of ecological crises.

It aims to mobilize more young people to commit to global challenges and to strengthen their cooperation with local authorities, in order to raise awareness of the urgency and shared responsibility of taking collective action to support and promote Climate and Gender Justice.

The project is aimed at young people aged between 15 and 18 enrolled in the formal system (at least 100 schools) and young people aged between 15 and 29 in non-formal education contexts, such as voluntary associations, including women's rights and youth associations (at least 75 associations) in 10 European Union (EU) countries - Austria, Croatia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Romania -, teachers, school principals working in the formal public education system, employees of local authorities and educational bodies, policy makers in the target countries and communities in general.

WE PROPOSE

  • Mobilize more young people to commit to global challenges and to strengthen their cooperation with local authorities, in order to raise awareness and sensitize them to the urgency and shared responsibility of taking collective action to support and promote Climate and Gender Justice.

WHY
?

Climate Change is the defining challenge of our time, with a complex and evolving dynamic: the Climate Crisis, Poverty and Inequality are, in fact, strictly interlinked and significantly influence three dimensions: inequalities in relation to carbon emissions, the impact on affected communities and the capacity to respond to climate crises. Both locally and globally, climate change response initiatives can minimize or suppress democratic and equity-promoting policies. Gender inequality and climate change (and ecological crises more generally) are linked and exacerbate each other, since the impacts of climate change affect women and men differently in all societies. Both need to be addressed in order to contribute to the 2030 Agenda and important European Union (EU) strategies such as GreenComp, the European Competence Framework (CEF) on sustainability. Gender often intersects with other categories of vulnerability, such as ethnicity, sexuality, ability, etc. An intersectoral approach between Environment and Gender can outline a path to enable solidarity and intervention beyond social categories. The action will adopt an ecofeminist perspective to facilitate this intersectional approach. Ecoality's ecofeminist perspective promotes:

1. The importance of everyone embracing transversal principles and values such as care, participation, non-violence, inclusion... This implies shared responsibility and participation based on concepts of Equity and Equality;
2. The transformation of mentalities, competences, attitudes and actions that are sensitive to Gender and Ecological Equality;
3. Analysing the relationships (power and privilege) between people, as well as between people and the planet, that help and hinder Sustainable Development.

WHAT DO WE DO?

  • Development of a KUVAS package - Knowledge, Understanding, Values, Attitudes and Skills of teachers related to the intersectionality of Climate Crises;
  • Training teachers and educators on the interrelated issues of global challenges, such as ecological crises, gender inequalities and constructive alternatives;
  • Promoting learning programs in schools (formal education) and with young people in voluntary associations and youth associations (non-formal education);
  • Networking workshops for Local Authorities to exchange experiences in the field of Global Citizenship Education (GCE), in order to share lessons learned to better integrate GCE into their policies and initiatives;
  • Creation of Eco-polis Labs (co-creation) with students, young volunteers, local authorities and with the participation of eco-feminist activists to debate and co-create effective local actions that strengthen Climate and Gender Justice in the target communities;
  • Promoting peer learning spaces between students and young volunteers to raise awareness and value activism, based on the themes of Climate and Gender Justice;
  • Holding international work camps, leveraging existing partnerships between partner organizations and their counterparts in European Union (EU) partner countries: Mozambique and Madagascar;
  • Community Action Camps with students, young volunteers and local authorities to implement initiatives developed through the Eco-polis Lab (e.g. environmental protection and disaster prevention work camps);
  • Support for youth-led initiatives (including the Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) mechanism and specific capacity building for youth-led organizations);
  • Awareness-raising communication campaigns led by young people and adopted by the partner municipality for dissemination.
