Summer School in Porto Santo. Young people reflect on Human Rights and Associations

“Youth, Associations and Human Rights” was the theme that marked the Summer School held in Porto Santo, between June 28 and July 2, an initiative integrated within the scope of the Action Plan “Da Escola para o Mundo – Agir, Incluir, Transformar” (From School to the World – Act, Include, Transform), promoted by AIDGLOBAL – Ação e Integração para o Desenvolvimento Global (AIDGLOBAL – Action and Integration for Global Development) and by Elementary and High School Professor Dr. Francisco de Freitas Branco.

For five days, students were encouraged to critically reflect on issues associated with human rights, through a set of participatory dynamics that sought to raise awareness of democratic leadership, based on values, and the need to act with the Universal Declaration as a compass of Human Rights.

In pursuit of this last objective, for example, the classroom was transformed into an art gallery, but instead of exhibiting paintings, sculptures or other artistic materials, images, voices and trajectories of leaders who impacted the world and who, through their ideas, left a mark on history. Martin Luther King and Rigoberta Menchú were two of the names that echoed in a (temporarily) artistic room from which students had the opportunity to learn more about the biography of each of the leaders.

Motivating young people towards social participation at school and in the community was another objective that remained present in the various training moments, in which participants were challenged to reflect on the values they would develop as leaders, on the causes for which they would fight and about the change they would like to bring about in their school or in the community to which they belong.

The playful learning of the concepts of leadership, cooperation, associations and youth activism paved the way for the launch of the last Summer School challenge, which consisted of encouraging participants to co-create a student association.

Catarina Pereira, 8th grade student at the Elementary and High School Professor Dr. Francisco de Freitas Branco, in Porto Santo, considers this an enriching experience “that will last for the rest of her life” and hopes, namely through the learning and interiorization of the leadership concepts – “being able to one day build and lead a student association”.

Catarina Pereira’s testimony can be heard in the video available here, which also contains the reflections of two more students and a selection of illustrative photographic records of some of the best experiences of the formative moment that marked the end of the 2020/2021 school year.

The Summer School, held under the Action Plan “From School to the World – Acting, Including, Transforming”, was aimed at students from the Elementary and High School Professor Dr. Francisco Freitas Branco, in Porto Santo.
