Responsible Consumption as a focus point

To sensitize people about Sustainable Consumption was one of the main goals of the “Economic and Family Management training – sustainable and fair options”, an event that took place on February 18th, 19th and 20th, and March 20th, 21st and 25th of 2019, at the Room of Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo of Porto Santo, promoted by the Regional Direction for Public Administration of Porto Santo (DRAPS) and AIDGLOBAL.

Economy, Sustainability and Human Rights were the keywords of the six sessions (5 hours each), certified by DRAPS and directed to their employees from all departments. Around 93 collaborators attended the training sessions (15 people per session on average).

The group thought about each family member’s importance in planning a monthly budget because that is the only way one can decide on what to save.

In defining what unnecessary and essential expenses are, a debate around the smartphone was initiated. It led to a discussion about the impact of electronic devices on Human Rights (Health, Child Labor, Security, Life…), the Environment (information and efforts unity around causes, rare minerals extraction, CO2 emissions…) and the Economy (Family budget, employment…). The students took the part of business owners, associations and even public entities, simulating a television debate.

After reflecting on the Circular Economy during the “Savings Market”, many water and energy savings tips were shared.

The importance of buying local, regional and national products, whenever possible, to develop the country’s economy and promote the Ecological Footprint was the main conclusion of the activity “Contest: the most economical and sustainable Wheat Soup”. The team that accomplished the more outstanding balance with a cheap and environmentally responsible soup won the contest.

At the end of the training, the students gave their opinion on making the Autonomous Region more sustainable and inclusive.

The AIDGLOBAL team facilitated the sessions, including Sofia Lopes, “Educate to Cooperate – Porto Santo and Madeira” manager, and Nuno Mira (volunteer).

The project is co-financed by Camoes – Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, I.P. and counts on the partnership from the Municipal Chamber of Porto Santo, a Regional Direction for Public Administration of Porto Santo and the Teachers from Madeira Union.
