“Go Youth! Jovens ativos pelo desenvolvimento” (Go Youth! Active Youth for Development) is the motto of the Cycle of Workshops that started in December 2021, in the Azores, and will continue in 2022 in several regions of the country.
On December 11st, São Miguel Island hosted the first of five workshops, as part of the Cycle “Go Youth! Jovens ativos pelo desenvolvimento” (Active Youth for Development) cycle, aimed at young people interested in politics. The initiative was held at the Azores University and promoted by AIDGLOBAL, with support from the Academic Association of the Azores University, as part of the project”Jovens na Política – Participar para a Cidadania Global (2ª Ed.)” (Youth in Politics – Participate for Global Citizenship (2nd Edition)”.
The session brought together about 10 participants, including militants of youth parties and young people interested in critical reflection on the various themes that made up the program structure of the workshop.
During the session, there was reflection on the concept of global citizenship and the importance of political participation for social activism, not forgetting the themes and goals that structure the 2030 Agenda, expressed in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through active and non-formal methodologies, the way in which the different projects and initiatives in São Miguel can contribute to achieving the SDGs and what actions should be implemented to achieve them was also analysed.
For Laura Gonzalez, trainer of the session, “this was an initiative designed to promote reflection and mobilize to action as the participants were challenged to build six proposals that could be implemented in the localities where they live and capable of responding to previously identified needs in the region. The training was also an opportune occasion for sharing experiences and perspectives, made particularly rich by the presence of young people from various parts of the island”.
The project “Jovens na Política – Participar para a Cidadania Global (2ª Edição)” (Youth in Politics – Participate for Global Citizenship (2nd Edition)) is promoted by AIDGLOBAL, co-funded by Camões, I.P. and has as partners the Conselho Nacional da Juventude (National Youth Council) (CNJ), Federação Nacional das Associações Juvenis (National Federation of Youth Associations) (FNAJ), Dypall Network, ISCTE Center for International Studies, Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude (IPDJ), Lisbon Youth Centre (CJL), and the Municipality of Santarém.
