Encouraging cultivation and interaction with the environment

Between the 12th and 13th of May, in partnership with Alto do Lumiar School, AIDGLOBAL promoted an action for the rehabilitation of the School Pedagogical’s Field, based on the relationship between Human Being and Nature, where students demonstrate their contribution for environmental sustainability.

To affirm an informed and active citizenship that guarantees the involvement and commitment of each one of us for a sustainable future, this initiative was intended to be an essential educational tool capable of stimulating inter and multidisciplinarity. Based on various tasks with traditional and innovative techniques that encourage environmentally responsible and conscious participation of young people in the maintenance of space, exploring the physical environment and identifying the different existing species, associated with intergenerational responsibility.
The school’s Pedagogical Field has existed for some time. Still, it was recovered thanks to the dedication and commitment of the 9th Grade (A, B and C) and 6th Grade (B and D) classes to the work assigned to them and which they carried out so well since they are aware of the importance of preserving and conserving the environment.
The students were provided with a Pedagogical Field map and the session plan to carry out the tasks, where all the stages that each class would have to go through to rehabilitate it were defined. The students were also given seeds from different countries to study their origin and curiosities about the use of the plant, as well as to cultivate and care for it.

The students enthusiastically accepted the challenge of creating a wooden box that became useful for the birth of a vegetable garden. They cut and collected weeds for composting/maintenance of the paths in the space, identified the species that live there, painted the wall separating the garden from the street and built portable greenhouses using reusable water bottles. Finally, the students of Alto do Lumiar Elementary School focused on learning and knowing about the countless seeds from different countries through a mobile phone application that allowed them to explore nature interactively and independently. Today, they are young people who are more attentive, aware, critical and reflective of environmental and climate issues. Moreover, they learn that strengthened teamwork can make us reach our goals better and faster.

This initiative was carried out in the scope of the “Neighborhood and Volunteering Labs” activity of the European project “NEAR – NEwly ARrived in a common home” is a European project funded by the European Commission, under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) with the ISMU Foundation as a promoter and as partner entities TamatCARDET, and AIDGLOBAL and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. In Portugal, this project is being developed in the city of Lisbon.
