AIDGLOBAL has just taken more than 35,000 books and school supplies to Mozambique, in order to promote literacy and encourage reading.

This action is integrated in the Passport for Reading program and aims not only to fill gaps in libraries and schools in the province of Gaza, but also to reinforce and expand the Chibuto District School Library Network and to equip several municipal libraries.

In partnership with Serviço Distrital da Educação, Juventude e Tecnologia do Chibuto, the needs of each of the network’s libraries have been identified, as well as the possibility of creating new libraries, so that books can be made available to those looking for them.

In January, AIDGLOBAL shared the news of shipping already the 5th container with more than 35,000 books and school supplies to the district of Chibuto in Gaza province, Mozambique. However, due to the current circumstances, this material has only just arrived in Chibuto!

The expedition from Portugal was possible thanks to the sponsorship of Scope Lda, which guaranteed the transport of the container, CTT, which provided the necessary packaging, and the Parish Council of Moscavide and Portela, which provided support in logistical matters such as the storage.

The freight for the excess cargo was graciously provided by Abreu Carga as it was not possible to place all the donated material in the container and AIDGLOBAL is very grateful for that.

AIDGLOBAL is also very grateful to all donors who offered a new life to their books and to the tireless team of more than 50 volunteers who dedicated their time to select, stamp, box and transport books on the weekends before the container left.

In Mozambique, it had the support of the Municipal Councils of Chibuto and Xai-Xai, which ensured the transport of the container from Maputo to Chibuto, also SDEJT and all the volunteers who unloaded the hundreds of boxes.

It is also important to highlight the fundamental and indispensable support of the AIDGLOBAL team in Portugal and Mozambique.

The Passport for Reading, created in 2008, is the largest intervention program of AIDGLOBAL in Mozambique in the context of combating illiteracy and encouraging reading. It creates, equips and supports municipal and school libraries in the Province of Gaza, promoting reading animation activities and training library technicians and teachers.
