July 17th was a day of balance: AIDGLOBAL joined Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, the main financier of the project “Educators in Motion – An Itinerant Education for Early Childhood”, implemented in five communities in district of Chibuto, to evaluate the results and project the challenges for the next phase.

The outcome of this meeting was very positive and reflects the result of a resilient work in the field, in which it is necessary to adjust several conditions: adjust the project activities to the rural context taking into account the local culture and resources; sensitize parents and guardians to the importance of early childhood education, encourage children to attend schools, and promote synergies with civil society organizations and local authorities to find innovative strategies that translate into solutions for challenges that teaching represents in Mozambique.

It is precisely due to the importance of adapting project activities to the reality of Chibuto`s communities, that AIDGLOBAL presents the bilingual, Portuguese – Xichangana edition of the book “O Grão de Milho Mágico” by the author Véronique Tadjo. Edited in partnership with Falas Afrikanas, “O Grão de Milho Mágico” appears precisely within the scope of the project “Educators in Motion – An Itinerant Education for Early Childhood”. It is a direct response to a 15-year work in Mozambique and to the demand of the Mozambican government, which seeks to promote the various national languages in conjunction with the official language, Portuguese.

This work is the first of four editions that are foreseen in the scope of this project. For the realization of this first book, it is worth mentioning the partnership developed with the Bantu Mosambiki Association, which ensured the translation of this work and which meets the work that AIDGLOBAL performs on the ground: a bet on bilingual literacy so that more children and young people can have school paths with happy endings.

“O Grão de Milho Mágico” can be purchased from the publisher Fala Afrikanas and through our Website (https://aidglobal.org/montra-solidaria/). It costs 8 Euros (with shipping included) and part of its revenues revert to AIDGLOBAL projects in Mozambique.

This work is also available in the 30 school and municipal libraries that are part of the Chibuto District School Library Network and to which AIDGLOBAL has already donated around 50,000 books and trained more than 300 teachers and technicians.

The project “Educators in Motion – An Itinerant Education for Early Childhood” has the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian as its main financier and is co-financed by Camões, I.P.
