Walk the Global Walk

The “Walk the Global Walk project mobilized young people to be catalysts for change in favor of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through education for Global Citizenship it proposed an innovative educational model that responds to the complexities of today’s world. The project was aimed at students and teachers of the 3rd cycle, secondary education and associates, local authorities, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and school communities.

In Portugal, the initiative was developed by AIDGLOBAL in partnership with the Municipality of Vila Franca de Xira.

DURATION

The project ran for 44 months, from December 2017 until August 2021.

WE PROPOSED

Increasing the involvement of young people in promoting the SDGs by promoting activities to raise the awareness of the training of young leaders.

Creating a replicable and innovative education model for Global Citizenship that integrates the development issues addressed in the 2030 Agenda that is adaptable to formal education curricula.

WHY
?

It is necessary to create opportunities and space for reflection and action in which young people can get involved in issues related to global citizenship and sustainable development. There is an urgent need to promote a culture of peace, respect for human rights and co-responsibility on a global scale. For this reason, the “Walk the Global Walk” project strived to develop European partnerships between local authorities and communities, creating a common educational structure within the formal education system, which supports and promotes the SDGs in 11 European countries: Italy, France, Croatia, Cyprus, United Kingdom (Wales and Scotland), Portugal, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania.

In the 2018/2019 academic year all efforts – from planning to action, from management to building more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable urban spaces – focused on SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

In the 2019/2020 academic year all efforts from knowledge to action, from problems to solutions focused on SDG 13: Climate Action.

In the 2020/2021 academic year all efforts  – from reflection to action, from transformation to promoting a culture of peace – will focus on SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
