Launch of The Little Prince/ *Xihosananyana* reinforces commitment to literacy in Mozambique

The universal work by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry gains a local translation aimed at democratizing access to reading. A total of 2,000 free copies will be distributed, along with the release of an audio version.

On March 26, AIDGLOBAL, represented by Jéssica Sitoe, Project Officer at the Mozambique Delegation, took part in the official launch of “Xihosananyana,” the local-language version of the universally acclaimed classic The Little Prince. This initiative marks an important milestone in promoting reading in Mozambique, bringing a globally recognized work closer to the national audience. The book explores universal themes such as love, friendship, and fundamental values essential for both individual and collective development, especially among younger generations.

The event resulted from a broad institutional partnership involving the Ministry of Education and Culture of Mozambique, AIDGLOBAL, the Embassy of France in Mozambique, UNICEF, Rádio Moçambique, and UNESCO, with additional support from Chapateca, Mathini Traduções, P.I.A.F, and the Jean-Marc Foundation.
The ceremony featured two distinct moments. The Secretary of State for Education, representing Minister Matilde Mosse, highlighted translation as a strategic tool to foster a love of reading within communities. This perspective was reinforced by the Counselor of the French Embassy, who emphasized the project as a meaningful contribution to democratizing access to literature in local languages.

The cultural dimension of the launch was enriched by the participation of two adolescents from Rádio Moçambique, who read excerpts from the book, bringing the audience closer to its sensitivity and message. To ensure broad impact, 2,000 copies of the work have been produced and will be distributed free of charge across various regions of the country, ensuring that access is not limited by economic barriers.

In addition, an audio version of the book will be made available through Rádio Moçambique, with logistical support from UNICEF in implementing outreach strategies across several provinces of Mozambique, thereby expanding the reach of “Xihosananyana.”

AIDGLOBAL will further contribute to the initiative by leading reading-promotion activities based on the story of “Xihosananyana.” These activities will take place in Chibuto, in schools where the organization has supported the creation of libraries.
