Around 15% of pregnant women between the ages of 15 and 49 are living with the virus that causes AIDS.
The project ‘Women of Chimundo United for Work and Health’ included an important community awareness campaign on HIV/AIDS in the Chimundo neighbourhood of Chibuto, in schools, health centres and public water fountains.
According to the National Council for Combating HIV/AIDS, currently in Mozambique, 15% of pregnant women between the ages of 15 and 49 live with the virus that causes AIDS. The epidemic is heterogeneous in geographical, socio-demographic and socio-economic terms. The main route of transmission continues to be heterosexual in about 90% of cases in adults.
The awareness campaign includes lectures, debates and plays in health centres, public water fountains and small markets. This initiative is being carried out in partnership with Reencontro – Mozambican Association for the Support and Development of Orphaned Children. The project “Women of Chimundo United for Work and Health” is co-financed by the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives and implemented by AIDGLOBAL and the Chimundo Community Centre.
