Educar para Cooperar – Loures (3ª Edição)

The project "Educar para Cooperar - Loures (3ª Edição)" (Educate to Cooperate – Loures (3rd Edition)) aimed to raise awareness about global inequalities. The school has assumed a fundamental role in this aspect, being responsible for constructing a comprehensive and active citizenship.

As the previous editions of the project, the third edition also follows the guiding principles of the National Strategy for Development Education (ENED).

DURATION

The 3rd Edition lasted for 23 months and took place from Setember, 2013 until August, 2015.

WE PROPOSED

Contributing to a world where schools are spaces for creating critical and active citizens and for promoting social transformation;

Turning the school "Agrupamento de Escolas de Catujal - Unhos" into a model school for integration and promotion of Development Education (EGC/DE);

Involving more teachers of the 2nd and 3rd cycle, as well as their students, in the questions related to Development Education (ECG/DE) and to promote its integration in curricula at the national level.

WHY
?

The "Educate to Cooperate" project arised from the need to fill a gap in Portuguese society and, above all, within the educational community, with regard to awareness of the global asymmetries that affect us all.

It is within the scope of Development Education (ED) that the theme of Global Citizenship has been worked on, deserving attention from civil society organizations and some public entities.

This project sought to raise children's awareness to various issues related to development, social and geographical inequalities, starting with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), covering topics such as Fair Trade and Volunteering, and working with innovative and participatory methodologies, characteristic of non-formal education.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE?

  • Integration of Education for Development (EGC/DE) in the classroom context, through participative and active sessions given by 6 teachers of four different classes of the 2nd and 3rd Cycles;
  • Two trainning sessions on this topic for teachers and educators;
  • 3rd Loures Development Education Week, involving around 750 students;
  • Participation of four teachers in national meetings and conferences;
  • Creation and dissemination of a manual of good practices, elaborated by the four facilitating teachers.
