Escola Comunitária para a Empregabilidade e o Voluntariado

The project "Escola Comunitária para a Empregabilidade e o Voluntariado" (Community School for Employability and Volunteering) aimed to contribute to poverty reduction through the promotion of employability and volunteering on the island of Porto Santo.

DURATION

The project had a duration of 17 months, running from 01st September 2022 to 31st October 2024.

WE PROPOSED

  • To involve unemployed and socially vulnerable people by developing social, personal and technical skills, preparing beneficiaries for the labour market and increasing their skills. Using training kits, courses were implemented and coaching sessions were held.

WHY
?

According to the Living Conditions and Income Survey 2020, the Autonomous Region of Madeira had the highest risk of poverty and social exclusion rate in the country. The condition of dual insularity poses added challenges to Porto Santo, among them: low educational levels, long-term unemployment and precarious jobs due to seasonality (Teixeira, 2016). This project arose from the needs identified on a daily basis by the social support team of the Parish Council, which receives many requests for support from people who need help to prepare their CV and accompanies families who could have more job stability if they had access to training actions and young people who need their horizons to be opened to have more job opportunities.

WHAT DID WE DO?

  • Developed 8 training kits with support materials for capacity building actions (session plans, pedagogical resources), in response to the lack of a local training offer;
  • Empowered volunteers to deliver training courses according to their availability and qualifications;
  • Developed 16 training courses (about 2 actions per theme/kit) aimed at reinforcing personal, social and technical skills, with the support of volunteers;
  • Facilitated 50 coaching sessions oriented towards the labour market;
  • Promoted 16 job-shadowing opportunities, in partnership with companies and public entities, with a view to practical learning about a profession.
