
On October 8th, within the scope of the "Porto Santo Sem Lixo Marinho" (Porto Santo Without Marine Waste) project, a joint cleanup campaign was carried out between the local community and the organization of the Underwater Photography and Video World Championship, in Porto Santo.
The initiative had the participation of 35 students from the Professional School of Hospitality (Porto Santo hub) and young volunteers from the World Championship preparation team. Everyone joined forces to clean up the coastal area of “Penedo do Sono”, on Porto Santo Island. Several items were collected, including plastic and glass, of which approximately 52 kilos were collected.
Actions for cleaning up coastal areas are important for raising awareness and collecting data, since marine litter represents one of the biggest environmental problems today.
“Porto Santo Sem Lixo Marinho” (Porto Santo Without Marine Waste) is a project is co-financed by the Environment Program of the EEA Grants and promoted by Associação Natureza Portugal, in partnership with WWF Portugal, AIDGLOBAL, ARM – Água e Resíduos da Madeira, Porto Santo City Council and the hub of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre in Madeira, hosted by ARDITI. It also has the support of WWF Norway and the Secretariat for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change of the Regional Government of Madeira.
