In February, the Sado river flooded the streets of Alcácer do Sal. In the summer, another wildfire. In August, yet another heatwave that no longer even surprises us. The climate crisis is not “far away”: it is here, closer than we think. And it does not weigh equally on everyone. When disaster strikes, it is often women and girls who carry the heaviest burden, while still being among the least heard voices in decision-making spaces.
It was with this message that AIDGLOBAL launched the communication campaign
“Climate Justice is Gender Justice”, which returns this year simultaneously in the 10 European countries that make up the Ecoality project consortium.
With COP31 just around the corner, taking place in Antalya, Türkiye, the campaign gives visibility to the real stories of people who live through floods, wildfires and heatwaves first-hand, showing how climate change and gender inequality shape everyday life in ways we cannot always see. Beyond the impact of these events on people’s lives, the campaign also sheds light on the responses that communities have been building.
But the campaign goes beyond the stories shared online. In the 10 countries involved, local events bring Climate Justice and Gender Justice into public spaces and communities, through performances, exhibitions, debates, demonstrations, documentary film screenings, climate marches and other initiatives.
Ecofeminist Short Film Showcase on 4 November
In Portugal, one of the highlights of the campaign will be the
Ecofeminist Short Film Showcase, which will take place on
the afternoon of 4 November, in the auditorium of the Lisbon Youth Centre at the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ), in Moscavide.
The initiative brings together secondary school students to watch a selection of short films exploring the relationship between the climate crisis and gender inequalities. After the screenings, invited activists will join the audience to discuss the issues raised, in a space for sharing, reflection and intergenerational dialogue.
The date also holds special meaning: 4 November is the day AIDGLOBAL celebrates its
21st anniversary. Marking this milestone with young people, film and debate on climate and gender justice is a way of reaffirming the Organisation’s commitment to transformative Global Citizenship Education.

The campaign is part of the European project
“Ecoality: Youth and Local Authorities Together for Climate and Gender Justice”, which aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to tackle climate change and gender inequalities from an ecofeminist perspective. In Portugal, the project is implemented by AIDGLOBAL and the Municipality of Loures, and co-funded by the European Commission and Camões – Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua.
