The community of Chiconelane, one of the five communities in which AIDGLOBAL created a school, had no access to water or electricity. The
Community School was supplied by the “Animadoras/ Educadoras em movimento” (Community educators) from a distant fountain with a manual pump, which was unsuitable for drinking. With the creation of the water borehole, AIDGLOBAL is contributing to increasing the number of sources of access to this water resource and ensuring the supply of drinking water, not only for the children of the school, but also for the students of the primary school and for the families living near the borehole. The “Animadoras/
Educadoras em movimento” (Community educators) now have more time to carry out educational activities. The construction of the water borehole was the responsibility of OVM Consultorias e Obras, Lda.
Energy reaches the community of Chiconelane through the installation of innovative equipment based on solar panels, called “Mini-Girafa Solar”, a pioneering project implemented by the Carlos Morgado Foundation. With the installation of this infrastructure, it is now possible to charge mobile phones using eight charging slots, listen to the radio, and have access to public lighting. The intervention also included the electrification of the school's support room, with a switch and outlet, as well as the lighting of the porch. All lighting is automatic with a photocell, and mobile phones can be charged between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., as requested by community members.
The inauguration of the infrastructure was attended by several authorities and community members, including the team from AIDGLOBAL's Mozambique delegation, the Chief of Chipadja, the Chief of the Godide Administrative Post, the Director of the District Health, Women, and Social Action Service (SDSMAS), the District Planning and Infrastructure Service (SDPI) technician, and the Administrator of the District of Chibuto, Celda Banze. More than 100 community members participated in the celebration, and lunch was offered after the ceremony to those present at the event. By the date of the inauguration of the water borehole and the “Mini-Girafa Solar”, the infrastructure was already benefiting 60 people, 11 families, and 10 teachers.
AIDGLOBAL, which has had a delegation in Chibuto since 2009, recognizes that for children to develop fully, it is necessary to implement projects aimed at creating adequate infrastructure for Early Childhood Education, actively contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4). The drinking water borehole and solar energy system, now installed, are a commitment to ensuring that Community Schools can offer essential services on a daily basis, such as access to potable water, promoting the well-being and health of the children who attend them, so that they can Grow, Learn, and Play in a safe and happy place.
