Education for GloCal Issues

“Education for GloCal Issues” was a project promoted by Monte ACE – Desenvolvimento do Alentejo Central (MONTE ACE - Development of Central Alentejo), in partnership with AIDGLOBAL, with the aim of promoting learning about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This Action involved teachers and students from the 2nd and 3rd Cycles e and High School from Évora, Estremoz and Arraiolos.

Topics such as Conflict and Peace, Responsible Consumption, Interculturality, Quality Education, Human Rights and Food Sovereignty were addressed, focusing on the sustainability of current development models, and debated throughout the project.

DURATION

The project lasted 20 months and took place from June 2016 to November 2017.

WE PROPOSED

Raising awareness of young people through SDG thematic content (Citizenship and participation, food sovereignty and security, etc.,) inserted in the action plans of school libraries;

Training of teachers for the promotion of actions on the themes of the SDGs and training of Civil Society Organizations in the area of Education for Development;

Creating of educational resources on the SDGs for intervention in school and public libraries.

WHY
?

Citizenship, in its broad sense, was presented as one of the responses to current challenges, which includes a set of rights and duties that should be transmitted in the training of children and young people so that in the future “sejam adultos e adultas com uma conduta cívica que privilegie a igualdade nas relações interpessoais” (Despacho 6173/2016) ("they will be adults with a civic conduct that favors equality in interpersonal relationships").

In Portugal, the promotion of Global Citizenship is the main purpose of the National Strategy for Development Education. The second Specific Goal of this Strategy refers to the promotion and consolidation of Development Education (DE) in the Formal Education sector at all levels of education, teaching and training, including the participation of educational communities.
