AIDGLOBAL launches educational resource to inspire young people to become active citizens in the face of ecological crises

Within the scope of the European project “ECOALITY: Young People and Local Authorities together for Climate and Gender Justice!”, this November, AIDGLOBAL and the Civil Society Organizations partners in the project developed the pedagogical resource “Caring for Our Planet: the ECOALITY Guide for Young People” and published it on their online platforms.

Climate change and inequality between women and men are some of the challenges that define our time, with complex and evolving dynamics. Ecological crises, poverty and inequality are strictly interconnected and worsen each other. The root causes of these global issues (such as colonialism, patriarchy and the current economic model) have a great impact on the Planet and on people, affecting them, however, differently, depending on who they are and where they live.

Therefore, it is essential to join forces to share responsibilities and participate in the formation of new mentalities, which are sensitive to issues of equity between women and men and climate injustice. It is therefore crucial that we adopt transversal principles and values such as care, empathy, solidarity, connection and empowerment. AIDGLOBAL and its partners believe that people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures can play a vital role, both in mitigating climate change and promoting equality between women and men, issues that are not just of interest to women and girls.

The “ECOALITY” Guide fits into the concept of Global Education and allows you to understand, using an inclusive and transformative approach, based on human rights, the way inequalities between women and men and climate injustices intersect and to know, in depth, the common values that are at the center of these themes. The innovative and interactive document was designed to support teachers, educators and young people from voluntary groups and associations.

Through this pedagogical resource, the aim is to promote knowledge and understanding of the intersectionality of global inequalities with ecological crises, raise awareness of the adoption of values and attitudes, based on social transformation and, thus, empower active citizenship. This intersection of themes includes exploring power imbalances between people, analyzing relationships between people and the Planet and sharing appropriate and effective learning methodologies.
The Guide seeks to empower, foster solidarity and empathy and inspire young people to become active citizens who drive change. It therefore encourages the development of activities in schools and associations or volunteer groups to promote community involvement.

Based on the resource “Caring for Our Planet: the ECOALITY Guide for Young People”, AIDGLOBAL is currently promoting the short-term action “Caring for Our Planet – Educating for Climate Action and Equity among Women and Men", a training course aimed at secondary school teachers, who teach in the municipality of Loures. This training action gives practical examples of activities that can be applied in classrooms and proposes a link between global citizenship themes and school curricula so that teachers and educators can motivate students to be conscious, critical, and participatory citizens.

There are still places available to attend the training. You can check everything here.

AIDGLOBAL invites all teachers, educators, and young people to explore this Guide and act as change agents for a more sustainable, inclusive, and fair world.
