"The Xica Butterfly in the Village of All Species", one of the books from the bilingual children's literature collection, "Livros para Começar" (Books to Start) launched by AIDGLOBAL, captivated the children of the Piki Nico Children's Center. On June 27, 2025, they were able to attend a dramatized reading of the story, purchase this and other titles from the collection, and even receive an autograph from Mélio Tinga, the author.
The activity was facilitated by the
AIDGLOBAL team in Mozambique and provided the Piki Nico children with a fun experience that not only sparked their imaginations but also highlighted the importance of reading and ensuring all girls and boys have access to books.
This playful approach reinforces the impact of the "Livros para Começar" (Books to Start) collection, which aims to instill a love for reading from early childhood and reflects Mozambique's rich cultural heritage. Parents and guardians had the opportunity to purchase books from the collection, contributing to AIDGLOBAL's mission in Chibuto: ensuring children in the district have access to a Community School where they can Play, Learn, and Grow, along with a daily meal.
Piki Nico: An Essential Partner in Supporting Community Schools
The dramatized reading of "Xica the Butterfly", well known as "Borboleta Xica" in Portuguese, embodies the Piki Nico Children's Center's strong commitment to the Chibuto Community Schools. This educational institution stands out as the first to financially support the Chibuto Community Schools through a sponsorship model, playing a fundamental role in the sustainability and success of the bilingual early childhood education project.
