Companies, public entities, associations and community groups attended the participatory workshops held on March 16, 17 and 18, online, within the scope of the “Waste-Free Ocean Porto Santo” Project (PSSLM). Each of the 28 entities represented participated in one of the three consultation meetings, contributing to the preparation of the Community Management Plan, for prevention and awareness, for the reduction of marine litter.
After a welcome from the Municipality of Porto Santo, Associação Natureza Portugal/WWF presented the PSSLM Project, which started in September 2021 and ends in February 2022. Then, some measures were shared (pre-identified in a previously submitted questionnaire to various entities on the island) that can contribute to the reduction of waste, especially at the level of disposable plastic, and participants were asked to select the most viable, that is, those with which the entities could commit. This exercise led to a brainstorming on the subject.
This was a first brainstorming moment that will be extended to other entities and new meetings. If there are no external impediments, the project team anticipates that the Community Management Plan can be signed during the summer of 2021.
The project “Porto Santo without Marine Waste”, co-financed by the Environment Program of the EEA Grants Portugal, is promoted by ANP|WWF Portugal, in partnership with AIDGLOBAL, ARM – Águas e Resíduos da Madeira, S.A., Porto Santo City Council and the Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology and Innovation (MARE–Arditi). The Action also has the support of WWF Norway and the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change of the Regional Government of Madeira.
