Young people from Santarém present proposals to improve local policies

The presentation is made within the scope of one of the activities of the project “Jovens na Política – Participar para a Cidadania Global (2nd Edition)” (Youth in Politics – Participating for Global Citizenship (2nd Ed.)).

Last December 2nd, the Global Citizenship discipline, from the Multimedia Production in Education Course of the Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Santarém (Higher School of Education of Santarém), hosts an initiative committed to encouraging youth to critically reflect on issues intrinsically associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to learn to plan proposals capable of improving and/or changing local policies or strategies related to the SDGs.

The promotion of digital political participation, in the context of Development Education in the territory of Santarém, was one of the pillars underlying the implementation of this action, which arose as a result of two workshops held during the month of November.

Representing MyPolis, a partner in this project, was Ilpo Lalli, pedagogical coordinator of the Platform presented to the young people of Santarém.

The MyPolis Platform seeks to promote political participation through technology, in a simple and intuitive manner, with the main features being voting on political proposals and the creation of a citizenship profile that uses gamification to increase interaction and commitment.

AIDGLOBAL participated in this initiative as a mentor of young people in the process of reflection and creation of proposals that were attached to the platform and then voted.

Digital political participation has been increasingly used, especially among young people, and is an important tool in the process of raising awareness and mobilising society into action for a world governed by respect for Human Rights and the principles that guide Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship.

The Cycle of Workshops was concluded successfully, with young people motivated to participate more actively in their communities, Youth Parties, and associations, through Global and Local Citizenship.

The project “Jovens na Política – Participar para a Cidadania Global (2ª Edição)” (Youth in Politics – Participating for Global Citizenship (2nd Edition)) is promoted by AIDGLOBAL – Acção e Integração para o Desenvolvimento Global (AIDGLOBAL – Action and Integration for Global Development), co-financed by Camões, I.P., and has the Chamber as partners the Centro Nacional da Juventude (National Youth Council (CNJ)), the Federação Nacional das Associações Juvenis(FNAJ) the Dypall Network, the ISCTE Center for International Studies, the Lisbon Youth Centre (CJL) of the IPDJ, I.P. and the Municipality of Santarém.
