University of Madeira hosts Conference on Domestic Violence and Poverty in Higher Education

The landmark project “Dialogar e Agir por + Igualdade” takes stock of the work carried out over two years in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (R.A.M.), with emphasis on the Studies and Policy Papers carried out on the themes of Domestic Violence and Poverty in Higher Education.

The final conference of the project will be held on Wednesday the 24th of January, in the events room, courtyard 1, of the Rectory Building - UMa, between 4pm and 6pm, on the theme “A Violência Doméstica contra as Mulheres e a Pobreza no Ensino Superior — Duas Realidades Estudadas na R.A.M." ("Domestic Violence against Women and Poverty in Higher Education - Two Realities Studied in the R.A.M."). This is an AIDGLOBAL initiative, in partnership with the University of Madeira (UMa), with the aim of addressing, debating and reflecting on the impact of current issues and challenges in the fight against Domestic Violence against Women and the promotion of students' access to higher education.

The meeting, made up of a panel of women committed to Human Rights and Education for Global Citizenship, will feature speeches by the President of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Madeira, Professor Liliana Rodrigues, the Founder and President of the Board of AIDGLOBAL, Dr Susana Damasceno, and the Manager of the project “Dialogar e Agir por + Igualdade na R.A.M.”, Dr. Sofia Lopes, , and promises an afternoon of sharing, information, knowledge and experiences.

Noteworthy is not only the debate on the Istanbul Convention - a comprehensive legal framework aimed at protecting women from all forms of violence - but also the presentation of a public petition aimed at protecting vulnerable families and people in situations of domestic violence in the R.A.M.

The event is free of charge, but prior registration for the conference is required.
