Workshop highlights the role of the media in promoting Human Rights

Communicating is a fundamental human right. The media have a responsibility and a duty to offer informed, conscious communication in an inclusive language that promotes interculturality and diversity, avoiding stereotypes.

The Workshop “Comunicar pelos Direitos Humanos – o papel dos media” ("Communicating for Human Rights - the role of the media") will be held on January 26th, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the Rectory Building of the University of Madeira (patio room II), with free and certified participation.

Presenting the “Guia de boas práticas dos órgãos de comunicação social na prevenção e combate à violência contra as mulheres e violência doméstica”( "Guide to good practices for the media in preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence promoting reflection on the role of the media in issues related to immigration (such as the social representation of immigrants in the media) and analyzing how social issues are dealt with in the media in the light of human rights are the objectives guiding the action.

Led by Dr. Joana Simões Piedade, who has a law degree, specializes in journalism and has a master's degree in Migration, Inter-Ethnicities and Transnationalism, this workshop invites participants to reflect on how social issues, such as Domestic Violence and Poverty, are represented in the media, and how these are understood and interpreted by the public. The role of the media in promoting human rights will also be addressed.

The initiative is intended to be a moment of debate and sharing of experiences between the participants and is aimed at journalists, students and others interested in communication.
