Thinking about alternatives for a more sustainable way of life

Discussion and workshop at "Porto Santo Fest"

"Alternatives" was the theme that involved the participants of the "Porto Santo Fest" Festival, on May 25th, at Quinta da Tamargueira, for a reflection on what each one can do to promote a more sustainable development.

After watching some documentaries about the Sustainable Development Goals, the participants talked about the dreams they have to take care of this House that belongs to everyone (Planet Earth): more volunteering, more electric cars, more innovation in social and environmental development service, better distribution of wealth at local and global level, less waste in the oceans, among others.

After the videos and the debate, about 15 participants, mostly children, rolled up their sleeves and participated in a cloth bag painting workshop, each one taking their artwork home. The impact of plastics on the environment and human health was a concern shared by everyone. However, it is necessary to analyse the alternatives well, such as cloth bags, opting, whenever possible, for organic and handcrafted products. A proof of this is the problem around cotton, produced in intensive mode, which requires a lot of land, water and fertilizers to grow, needing to be harvested, processed and brought to market, which implies a large ecological footprint. Porto Santo Fest" was an event promoted by DRAPS, in partnership with AIDGLOBAL under the project "Educate to Cooperate - Porto Santo and Madeira", the Cultural and Recreational Association of Espírito Santo and the Association of Producers of Porto Santo Island. The project aforementioned is co-financed by Camões - Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, I.P. and has as partners the Porto Santo Municipal Council, DRAPS and the Madeira Teachers Union.
